More Fun Than a Video Game?

What do students actually enjoy about learning an instrument? This is a question that we have been asking ourselves for the past few years.

We all know that the more a student enjoys their lessons, the more they play their instrument ultimately, the more progress they make. But how do those two parts connect?

let’s start by looking at a non-musical example. Video games - Why do so many people enjoy playing video games? It’s not because they’re super easy, but it’s also not because they are impossibly hard.

There’s a sweet spot between these two where we find the most enjoyment, we want to peruse something just out of our reach and achieve it through putting in some hard work and effort. Make the challenge too hard and students can’t see a route to progress and they give up, make it too easy and students get bored of the lack of challenge.

We identified most students that give up learning an instrument do so within the first couple of years. So what’s the answer?

Based on this idea we identified that the key to students really enjoying the early stages of learning a musical instrument was to give them a framework. That’s when we began to develop the Good Vibes Music Academy Star Levels.

The Star Levels are a series of certificates designed to take students from complete beginner to the Initial/grade 1 stage. They are 1 Star, 2 Star, 3 Star, Bronze Silver and Gold.

The time it takes typically to achieve each one goes up the higher through the stages a student moves and it not only prepares them musically to take on the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus but, it also gets them used to the idea of playing in-front of their teacher for grading.

To make this even more engaging we’re doing away with the old style textbooks of nursery rhymes and made-up melodies. Our Star Levels are made up of current rock and pop songs students know and love. From The White Stripes to Taylor Swift our Star Levels are preparing students perfectly for the Trinity Rock and Pop grades.
