What is REAL Teaching?
At Good Vibes Music Academy, you'll often hear us talk about REAL Teaching.
It's much more than a catchy phrase. It's the philosophy behind every lesson we teach and one of the reasons our students make such strong progress.
REAL stands for:
Relevant
Engaging
Assessment
Language
Together, these four principles help us deliver what we're all about: real music, real teaching and real progress.
So, what does REAL Teaching actually look like in practice?
R is for Relevant
The best lessons start with music that students genuinely want to play.
Whether it's Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters, Olivia Rodrigo, Green Day or AC/DC, we build lessons around music that inspires each student. Learning familiar songs helps students connect with their instrument from the very first lesson and keeps them motivated to keep playing.
Of course, every lesson is carefully planned to develop technique and musicianship, but we believe those skills are learnt best through music that feels exciting and meaningful.
That's why our students don't spend months working through exercises before they play a song. They start making music from day one.
Relevance is also about understanding the individual student.
Some students want to work towards Trinity Rock & Pop exams. Others dream of joining a band, writing songs or simply playing for fun. REAL Teaching allows us to tailor the journey around those goals while still providing a clear structure through the Good Vibes Learning Pathway.
E is for Engaging
Learning should never feel like a chore.
At Good Vibes, we believe students make the fastest progress when they're fully engaged in the lesson.
That means lessons are practical, interactive and full of music-making.
Students might be:
Playing along with backing tracks
Learning songs they love
Creating their own music
Using music technology
Playing with their teacher
Preparing for a live performance
Every lesson is designed to keep students involved because engagement is what creates momentum, and momentum leads to progress.
It's one of the reasons our lessons are built around our Five Pillars: Ability, Creativity, Musicality, Collaboration and Performance. Every activity has a purpose and helps students develop as complete musicians.
A is for Assessment
Assessment doesn't have to mean exams or formal tests.
In fact, some of the most valuable assessment happens during the lesson itself.
Our teachers are constantly listening, observing and asking questions to understand how each student is progressing.
Can they apply a new rhythm?
Do they understand why those chords work together?
Can they transfer a skill into a new song?
These small moments of assessment allow teachers to make tiny adjustments throughout the lesson, helping students move forward at the right pace.
Alongside this, our students follow the Good Vibes Learning Pathway, progressing through Star Levels before moving on to Trinity Rock & Pop Grades if they choose.
This gives every student clear goals, recognisable milestones and visible progress throughout their musical journey.
L is for Language
Words matter.
The language a teacher uses can make the difference between a student feeling confused and feeling capable.
That's why we work hard to make lessons clear, positive and accessible.
Rather than filling lessons with complicated musical jargon, we explain concepts in a way that's easy to understand and immediately useful.
As students develop, so does their musical vocabulary, but we introduce new language at the right time and in the right context.
Good teaching isn't about using the most technical words.
It's about helping students understand music in a way that sticks.
Positive language also helps create an environment where students feel comfortable trying something new, making mistakes and continuing to improve.
Why REAL Teaching Works
REAL Teaching isn't a separate part of the lesson.
It shapes every lesson we teach.
By making learning relevant, engaging, continuously assessed and supported through positive language, students stay motivated and continue making progress.
Combined with our Learning Pathway, Star Levels, Trinity Rock & Pop exams and opportunities to perform, collaborate, write songs and play in bands, REAL Teaching helps students become more than instrumentalists.
It helps them become complete musicians.
